This is an entry to a project called "Exquisite Project" conducted by Melissa Crandall in 2022 working off the quote " "Behind every man now alive stands thirty ghosts..." by Arthur C. Clarke. The main, haphazard figure is walking on a path of glass tile (produce via industrial refinement, but still dirty and uneven) and reaching towards yet another goal. That goal is likewise imperfect, but it does hold a bit of promise in the form of a different tool (the small key). The figure holds its face in contemplation of the key, the goal, and wondering how to interact with it. Behind it the misshapen ghosts are there, influencing the situation with their observation. They cannot speak (no mouths), they can't really hear or listen, but they are able to perceive somehow (the wide open void in each face) They are uniform, but still different enough that you know one is not the other. They are there, watching you, watching the living as they try and interact with a new goal. Will the living succeed or will this be another shattered bulb scattered on the path forward?
The figure knows it is being watched. It knows that it owes a debt to the dead. It knows they are watching.
